Pontes: Europe's DLT Interoperability Vision
While the digital euro dominates headlines, the ECB is working on a parallel initiative that could be equally transformative: Pontes — an interoperable European Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) system scheduled to go live towards the end of 2026.
What is Pontes?
Pontes (Latin for "bridges") is the ECB's initiative to create a system that connects different DLT platforms used across the European financial system. Rather than building a single blockchain, Pontes acts as a bridge between multiple distributed ledgers, enabling them to settle transactions in central bank money.
Why It Matters
The European financial sector is experimenting with DLT for various use cases:
- Tokenised bonds and securities
- Tokenised commercial bank money
- Smart contract-based settlement
- Cross-border payment innovation
The problem? These experiments are happening on different, incompatible platforms. Without interoperability, the European DLT ecosystem risks fragmentation. Pontes solves this by providing a settlement layer that works across all connected DLT platforms.
How It Works with the Digital Euro
Pontes and the digital euro are complementary initiatives:
- Digital euro: Retail CBDC for everyday payments by citizens and businesses
- Pontes: Wholesale infrastructure for institutional DLT settlement
Together, they create a comprehensive digital money ecosystem — retail at the consumer level and wholesale at the institutional level, both backed by central bank money.
Wholesale DLT Settlement
Alongside Pontes, the ECB is launching wholesale settlement for DLT-based transactions using tokenised central bank money starting September 2026. This means:
- Banks can settle DLT-based transactions in central bank money
- Tokenised securities can be settled instantly (delivery-versus-payment)
- DLT infrastructure is legitimised for institutional finance
- The foundation for a tokenised European financial system is laid
The Bigger Picture
Pontes represents a strategic shift in how the ECB thinks about money and infrastructure:
- Embracing DLT: Rather than fighting blockchain, the ECB is adopting it for institutional use
- Interoperability over monopoly: Building bridges, not walled gardens
- Central bank money at the core: Ensuring the safest form of money underpins all transactions
- Future-proofing: Creating infrastructure that can adapt as technology evolves
Pontes is about ensuring that as Europe's financial system becomes more distributed and tokenised, central bank money remains at its heart.
